Unity is one of the most famous tools in the gaming industry, but at the same time it is one that is very easy to overlook. And that is easy to understand, because your favorite mobile game might be built on Unity, just like a horror game with detailed graphics.

Unity’s big advantage is that it doesn’t belong to any single genre, platform, or budget level. As you will see later, it is perfectly suited to indie studios with two people on board, and to large, famous studios too.

In this article, we will take a look at the most popular games made with Unity. We have split it three ways: a general list covering PC and console, a mobile list, and a group of indie titles.

Fgfactory has built full-cycle Unity projects for mobile, PC, and educational clients, so the games below aren’t just names we randomly added from other lists. Many of the problems that shaped them, like networking, build size, and keeping frame rates stable on cheap Android hardware, are the same ones that we have faced in the past.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the famous Unity games and why Unity itself is the best engine right now.

How We Choose the Most Popular Unity Games

“Most popular Unity Games” is quite a vague term that evades definition. There is no one single variable that helps to qualify the game as the best or the worst, that’s why in the articles like this one, readers should understand the methodology. So, here what we considered when choosing the games:

  • Commercial success of the game based on sales, downloads, or revenue, only with reliable sources giving that information.
  • Player reach and the size of the active community; we also look into how long it was active.
  • Critical reception, including reviews, awards, and the general verdict from people who play games professionally.
  • Cultural impact and how often it is recognized by non-gamers.
  • Community strength, shown through modding, streaming, tournaments, and other activities of people who keep playing it.
  • Longevity, or just its importance years after release.
  • Cross-platform presence and the quality of it.
  • 2026 relevance and in what context it was mentioned (maybe port or updates etc.).

If you take any of these criteria without counting the rest, it won’t make much sense. You can even read this list for the top games made with Unity below as an informed shortlist.

The best thing about Unity for developers is its range of possibilities for absolutely different games. In our list are only critically acclaimed, popular games made in Unity, and they are all different, with none of them repeating each other.

Here’s the shortlist before we get into the individual write-ups.

Sons Of The Forest 22 Feb, 2024 Endnight Games Survival, Horror Sequel that outsold its predecessor fast

In the list, we lean a bit more towards survival and multiplayer, which is partly dictated by where Unity has been popular. Games with unpredictable open worlds or just shared worlds tend to work based on networking and physics, and Unity is a home of both these.

Rust

Rust - Famous Unity Engine Game

Release Date: February 8, 2018
Developer: Facepunch Studios
Genre: Multiplayer survival
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S

Rust is a multiplayer survival game where you start, essentially, from scratch. At first, you have to gather wood and stone, build tools, and put up walls to protect what you’ve collected, but the real zest and probably a problem too, is that everyone else on the server is doing the same thing. In the spirit of such games, most of these other players would rather raid your base than build their own.

There is an intentionally built tension between slow personal progress and the constant threat from other players that is one of the game’s appeals. On the technical side the hard part is keeping large servers running well, since a single map can hold hundreds of players plus everything they’ve built and stay online for weeks.

Among Us

Among Us - One of the most famous Unity games

Release Date: November 16, 2018
Developer: Innersloth
Genre: Social deduction
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, Google Play, App Store

In Among Us a small crew somehow has to keep a spaceship running while there are one or two hidden impostors killing everyone. You complete simple tasks and keep an eye on the people around you, and once a body is found in the game you get into a discussion where players accuse each other and vote someone out.

It is not at all a complex game or the one with a sophisticated system behind it. The game’s zest is Unity’s cross-platform support, which allows friends to join the same lobby from different devices.

Did You Know? Among Us came out in 2018, and for two years it did not achieve any commercial success or recognition at all. Only in the middle of 2020 did the game become popular, when streamers started to play it. Innersloth, the developer of the game, had already moved on to other projects by the time it became famous.

Phasmophobia

Phasmophobia - popular game made with Unity

Release Date: September 18, 2020
Developer: Kinetic Games
Genre: Co-op horror investigation
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S

Phasmophobia, if you look at the dictionary, is an intense, persistent, and irrational fear of ghosts or supernatural spirits. Well, in this game it is not so irrational, as you find yourself in a haunted location. You are equipped with the tools to hunt the ghosts that dwell there, and the job is to work out what kind of entity is there. There are cameras, thermometers, and other tools to gather evidence. The ghost can hear you when you speak, so voice chat with your friends is not that helpful and makes the atmosphere only more fearful.

It’s a cooperative horror game where you have to investigate. The game shipped for flatscreen and VR, which, we must say, is unusual for a small team.

Valheim

Valheim among the Best Unity Games

Release Date: 2021 (early access)
Developer: Iron Gate Studio
Genre: Survival sandbox
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 (Releases on: 2026), Xbox Series X|S

In a viking survival sandbox with huge possibilities of exploration, Valheim leaves you to chop trees, sail between regions, and fight the bosses. The world is procedurally generated, and Unity streams it around the player so the long stretches of open sea and forest are continuous. Iron Gate Studio had only five people working on this game, and CEO Richard Svensson has been communicating about the game when it was only a project, growing the fan base in advance of the release. No wonder this game sold millions of copies within just the first three weeks!

Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact among famous games made with Unity

Release Date: September 28, 2020
Developer: HoYoverse
Genre: Open-world action RPG
Platforms: PC (Epic Store), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, App Store, Google Play

Genshin Impact is a large open-world action RPG that is happening in the world called Teyvat. The task that you have is to find your sibling who got lost, but along the way you get to explore a lot and meet unique friendly characters that will help you fight. Thanks to a live-service schedule there are constantly added new regions and stories.

The game runs on PC, consoles, and phones, and it is one of the great AAA-scale productions done on Unity. Moreover, it’s often the first example people reach for when they argue Unity can go big.

The Forest

The Forest game made on Unity Engine

Release Date: April 30, 2018
Developer: Endnight Games
Genre: Survival horror
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 4/5

Once you plain crash, you appear on a peninsula that, unfortunately, is inhabited by cannibal mutants. Of course, in order to survive you need to fight them, but there is another pressing matter – you have to find your son.

During the day it is an engaging, but more or less standard survival crafting game, but at night, and especially down in the caves, it becomes genuine horror. Unity’s physics and building systems allow players to carve out shelters and set traps in terrain that reacts to what they do.

Fall Guys

Fall Guys among the best Unity Games

Release Date: August 4, 2020
Developer: Mediatonic
Genre: Party battle royale
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch

Fall Guys has a dozen clumsy characters in a space full of obstacles and… eliminates them round by round until one is left. It’s a battle royale from one point of view, but it also has features of a party game. It is funny, too. Most of it comes from watching physics send everyone in the wrong direction. Unity’s physics engine is vital to this game, since the slightly unreliable movement is what makes each round different, and fun. It is one of the most unusual and fun games made with Unity Engine.

Tip for developers: Fall Guys works because the movement is funny, they did not try to make it look realistic. If you’re prototyping something where the appeal is in how it feels to move, spend your early Unity time tuning that with rough placeholder art and hold off on the polished models until you’re sure the core is enjoyable.

Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight - one of the best games made with Unity Engine

Release Date: February 24, 2017
Developer: Team Cherry
Genre: Metroidvania
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch

Hollow Knight is one of the games everyone heard about. Even those who do not play games must have heard the title. It is a hand-drawn game, where players go through a ruined insect kingdom. Very often people say it is one of the best games made with Unity Engine, and one of the best Unity games for showing what the engine can do in the right hands. Here, you explore a large connected map, and get the abilities that open new routes. And yes, there are a lot of demanding boss fights.

Unity’s 2D tooling gave a three-person team the means to build a world this big and atmospheric which is still amazing, even if you know the capabilities of Unity.

Raft

Raft one of the most popular Unity Game

Release Date: June 20, 2022
Developer: Redbeet Interactive
Genre: Co-op survival
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S

A small wooden platform in the middle of the ocean with a hook, is all that you have at the beginning of this game. However, as you pull debris out of the water to expand it into a proper floating home, you get to survive. You can play alone or with friends, managing hunger and thirst, gathering materials and exploring the islands you drift past.

Unity brought the floating-object physics and the shared-building side that allows several players to work on the same raft together. This game began as a student project and grew into a real commercial success, which to be fair, happens quite often with Unity.

Sons Of The Forest

Sons of the Forest - Top Unity Engine Game

Release Date: February 22, 2024
Developer: Endnight Games
Genre: Survival horror
Platforms: PC (Steam)

Sons Of The Forest is the follow-up to The Forest, and it increases in everything: a bigger island, enemies are smarter, seasons that change the environment, and there is of course an AI companion who’s genuinely useful. It is one of the most popular games made with Unity.

The core is still open-world survival horror, but the simulation is better this time and the world seems to be more alive than we saw it in the original.

Unity’s open-world streaming and the improved AI systems brought the larger map.

Most Popular Mobile Games made with Unity

When it comes to mobile games, Unity’s engine is almost non-negotiable. A large share of the top games on the App Store and Google Play are built on it, and the reasons for that are just practical, as simple as that. Let’s take a look at top games made with Unity you can play from your phone.

Building for phones is targeting thousands of device models with very different chips, screens, and heat limits. But that’s not all, you have to take into consideration touch controls, battery use, small download sizes, frequent updates, and a monetization model that are sustainable.

Besides, you need the same build to run on iOS and Android without maintaining two separate games which can be a hassle. Unity is very oriented for that which is why a lot of popular unity games are created on mobile first.

Pokémon GO

Pokémon GO - Mobile Game made on Unity Engine

Release Date: July 6, 2016
Developer: Niantic (games business acquired by Scopely in 2025)
Genre: Augmented-reality location game
Platforms: App Store, Google Play

Pokémon GO just returned Pokémon and placed it in the real world, and it’s one of the wildly popular Unity games. In the end, or rather as a result, millions of people started walking around their neighborhoods to catch these creatures like they are real. The essence of the game is going outside, because the game tracks your location.

There’s a steady rhythm of raids and community events to keep people doing that. Unity’s cross-platform foundation and its handling of the camera, GPS, and AR overlay made it possible to deliver that experience to iOS and Android together. Nearly ten years on it’s still one of the highest-grossing mobile games, and it now sits under Scopely after a $3.5 billion acquisition that closed in 2025.

Hearthstone

Hearthstone mobile game made with Unity

Release Date: March 11, 2014
Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
Genre: Digital collectible card game
Platforms: App Store, Google Play

Hearthstone is Blizzard’s digital card game, and it’s a good reminder that large studios use Unity too. You build decks and play them out against opponents in turn-based matches that are easy to pick up but have a lot of depth once you get into deckbuilding and timing. A lot of the appeal is in the presentation, since the cards and board have a physical, tactile quality that makes each match satisfying to play.

Unity lets Blizzard ship one consistent version of that across desktop and mobile, so a game on a phone feels much the same as one on a PC.

Call of Duty: Mobile

Call of Duty Mobile - Top Unity Engine Game

Release Date: October 1, 2019
Developer: TiMi Studio Group (Tencent)
Genre: First-person shooter
Platforms: App Store, Google Play

This is essentially a console shooter, extremely famous, but available and fully customized for the phones. Since it’s a competitive first-person game, the gunplay should be fast and responsive at a steady frame rate, which is difficult to achieve on any hardware that is weaker than a console. Phones are obviously much weaker.

Unity allowed TiMi to optimize and to offer scalable graphics settings, so the game runs across a wide range of phones, including the simple ones, too. Moreover, it was one of the most downloaded mobile games in its first year and has stayed as one of the best mobile shooters since. It is one of the most popular games made on Unity.

Genshin Impact (Mobile)

Genshin Impact Mobile among the Best Unity Engine Games

Release Date: September 28, 2020
Developer: HoYoverse
Genre: Open-world action RPG
Platforms: App Store, Google Play

Genshin Impact appears here again because its mobile version is an achievement itself. It is a free-to-play open-world action RPG where you explore a large fantasy world, change between a team of characters, and fight using an elemental combat system. What makes it different from anything else on mobile is scope: most phone games are built small on purpose, while Genshin brings a full console-sized world to a device that fits in your pocket, and still looks good doing it.

Just imagine a large open world that runs on PC and console, then has to fit onto a phone, keep its visuals, and deliver essentially the same experience on far weaker hardware. It is, once again, a great achievement.

So in this case, the mobile story is mostly about optimization and cross-platform saves. Your progress follows one account across phone, PC, and console, so you can start on the couch and keep going on the bus. Getting close to console-level visuals on a phone, at this scale, was only achievable with an engine like Unity.

Crossy Road

Crossy Road - Popular Mobile Unity Game

Release Date: November 20, 2014
Developer: Hipster Whale
Genre: Endless arcade / action
Platforms: App Store, Google Play

In Crossy Road, players tap to move a character forward across roads, rivers, and train tracks, and you keep going until you get hit or fall in the water. There is no finish line and no story. The whole point of this game is to beat your last score, and that became one of the most playable things ever.

However, game sessions do not look the same. You collect coins, and you can unlock more and more characters. The main psychological thing that is working here is extremely simple: “one more try”!

This game, what one might call a “free but fair” model, with optional ads and cosmetic characters, and it is a template that many mobile studios copied. The game has been downloaded well over 100 million times.

Famous Indie Games Made with Unity

Famous Indie Games Made with Unity

If you take another look at the lists we’ve just shown, you might think that only AAA or big studios can afford working with Unity engine. That can’t be more wrong. Unity’s most recognizable success stories come from small indies studios.

In other words, thanks to the versatility that Unity provides, even relatively small teams can create commercially successful and critically acclaimed games. And there is no need for complex infrastructure.

Cuphead

Cuphead - Indie Game made with Unity

Release Date: September 29, 2017
Developer: Studio MDHR
Genre: Run-and-gun / boss rush
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch

Cuphead might be a 1930s cartoon, if you judge it by the looks. Every frame was drawn and inked by hand, then animated in the style of old Fleischer and Disney shorts. And yet, even though the art looks friendly, there is a tough action game that includes a lot of boss fights.

The team behind it was very small, so the engine work had to stay out of the way. Unity allowed the studio to pour its time into animation and hand-painted backgrounds. Its 2D tools and platform support helped to add hand-drawn content across PC and consoles.

Subnautica

Subnautica - Famous game made on Unity

Release Date: January 23, 2018
Developer: Unknown Worlds Entertainment
Genre: Underwater survival
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch

In Subnautica, you will find yourself in the ocean of an alien planet. Your ship crashed, so there is no way to get back home. So now you need resources, build bases and submarines, and try to survive what is down there.

There is more exploration and dread more than combat. The game’s appeal comes a lot from just not knowing what waits in the dark water.

An open underwater world needs streaming of terrain, water effects, and do not forget about sea creatures. Unity gave the team the physics, lighting, and rendering tools to build that world, and to keep it improving.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

Hollow Knight: Silksong - Indie Game made with Unity

Release Date: September 4, 2025
Developer: Team Cherry
Genre: Metroidvania
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch

Silksong is the follow-up to Hollow Knight, and fans waited for it long enough – roughly six years. This time you play as Hornet in a new kingdom, with a faster and more aggressive move set.

There are more than forty boss encounters, and it is all in the connected map. You explore, get new abilities, and enter new, harder areas as your skills grow.

Building a sequel this size on a small team is hard. Unity carried the hand-drawn 2D world and let the same build reach PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and both Switch models. The game sold more than seven million copies very quickly.

Did You Know? Hollow Knight: Silksong was so popular on launch day that it crashed storefronts including Steam, Xbox, and the Nintendo eShop.

Ori and the Blind Forest

Ori and the Blind Forest - Indie Unity Engine Game

Release Date: March 11, 2015
Developer: Moon Studios
Genre: Platformer / Metroidvania
Platforms: PC (Steam), Xbox, Nintendo Switch

Ori and the Blind Forest is a hand-painted platformer with a story about loss and belonging. In the game, players guide a small white spirit through a dying forest. It is known for its beauty and for a soundtrack.

The mechanics are built on precise movement, new ability you can get, and light backtracking to reach places you could not before.

Moon Studios had a few teams working across several countries. The fact that this team was not in even one room, the common base provided by Unity helped them achieve a lot with this game

Monument Valley

Monument Valley - Indie Game made on Unity Engine

Release Date: Jul 12, 2022
Developer: ustwo games
Genre: Puzzle
Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, App Store, Google Play

So far we have been talking about more complex games. But what about a simple puzzle game about impossible shapes? Moment Valley is another one of the top Unity games. You guide a silent princess through buildings that bend and twist like an M.C. Escher drawing. You rotate parts of the world to line up paths that should not exist. Each level is short and frankly built like a work of art.

The impossible geometry needed a 3D engine that could be posed to read like a flat 2D image. Unity let ustwo build that effect and deliver it on iOS and Android, where the game reached a wide audience and won design awards. It is considered to be one of the best games made with Unity on mobile.

Why Unity Remains a Top Choice for Game Development in 2026

Why Unity Engine is Top Choice for Game Development in 2026

Since we have described so many cases where Unity was a foundation for so many games across genres, it is easy to think that the engine is responsible for that entirely. Unity provides a technology foundation which allows teams to face a lot of possibilities they wouldn’t have in a different case, but that’s the only thing the game, any game, is built on. The final quality that people will face and play (or not) depends on design, art, engineering, production, content, optimization, and the development team.

That’s a lot of work that requires lots of professionals involved long term. With that in mind, here is why so many studios still reach for Unity in 2026, and why so many top unity games keep shipping on it.

Cross-Platform Reach

Having just one codebase for different platforms is an extremely time and budget saving thing. And Unity can target mobile, PC, console, and VR or AR. So, you don’t need duplicated work. A team can build once and release in more places while without Unity you would have to create a game for each system. It is a big reason, so many games built with Unity appear on several platforms at once.

Each platform still needs its own optimization and its own store certification. But Unity shortens the path to a cross-platform release, but it does not erase that final round of platform-specific work.

Fast Prototyping and Iteration

Games are hard to plan on paper. Before you actually get to play it, you can not tell if the idea is worth the game. With Unity, you can test the idea very quickly. A designer can try a mechanic, feel it, change it, and try again the same day.

A large library of ready-made assets and tools speeds things up, and short feedback loops like these are one of the main reasons games developed in Unity can move from a rough concept very fast. A lot of famous Unity games might have taken much longer to arrive in the world without this advantage.

Tip: Prototype your riskiest mechanic first. If the core loop is not fun in a rough build, better art and more features will not save it. Unity’s quick iteration allows checking everything cheaply.

Strong Mobile-First Track Record

Unity has a long history on phones, and actually a lot of famous unity games, even in these lists, were made for phones. The reality of mobile is quite messy, as there are thousands of device types, tight performance limits, touch controls, and small storage budgets. But Unity handles that more than well.

Many of the most popular mobile games made with Unity run flawlessly on cheap and expensive phones alike.

The engine also supports live-service updates, so teams can keep shipping new content after launch. That matters because mobile stays the largest slice of the games market.

Scalability from Indie to AAA

As you can see from this article, the number of AAA games is big, but so is indie ones. And these are all games developed in unity.

However, even though there are these AAA games made with Unity, large productions still need serious engineering, big content pipelines, heavy optimization, and specialized staff. All the things that we have mentioned earlier. And without these no famous games made with Unity are possible.

AI Features in Unity Game Engine

AI is important now, and teams building games with the Unity engine have more possibilities to generate procedural content faster with it. Another use case is driving smarter NPC behavior and automating repetitive tasks that appear during the development. Another, more traditional area of AI deployment is testing and analytics.
