We've seen this play out across game and interactive software projects. Off-the-shelf tools cover the basics, but the moment your product needs custom game mechanics, a specific monetization flow, or a player engagement system that doesn't exist yet, then such a solution can’t be useful.

There's no fixed price for custom software. The cost depends entirely on the scope of what you're building. Two other things move the number: the seniority of the team, and how clear your requirements are at the start. Vague briefs get expensive, because the team builds, learns it was wrong, and rebuilds.
